He was most renowned for his performance in female roles, and brought about a revolution in stage makeup, costumes and choreography, and was the author of many original plays. He achieved a measure of international renown through his overseas tours, when he formed friendships with stars of screen and stage in Europe and America. His life story was the basis for the 1993 film Farewell My Concubine. Mei Lanfang's former residence is now a museum, which exhibits the collection of art works and materials donated by his wife.
