The area near the Ancient Beijing Observatory was the site for astronomical observations during the Yuan dynasty. The rooftop Ancient Observatory now displays a collection of beautifully-wrought pre-telescopic instruments which were built during the Ming dynasty under the guidance of Jesuit priests in their capacity as astronomical advisors to the Ming court. Inside the observatory building is an astronomy museum.
